Synopsis

Once a Disciple, forever a Disciple.

After the death of her father, Ash learned an important lesson: being a Disciple is dangerous. The club her father had loved, the club that had been their family, took him from her. She couldn’t stay and wait for the day it would take the man she loved from her, too. So, she left. Now, she’s the one in danger, and the Disciples are the only ones that can keep her safe. She has no choice but to return to the club and the man she left behind.

A Disciple will fight like a savage for what is his.

Sketch has what he needs: his tattooing, the club, and his bike. Anything else would require a heart, and his was ripped out of his chest a long time ago. It wasn’t coming back. At least, not until she did. His heart isn’t the only thing Ash brings with her, though. She has a daughter. A daughter old enough to be his. A daughter Ash claims might not be. But in his heart, Sketch knows the truth. That little girl is his… just like her mom.

This biker knows one thing: a Disciple’s daughter’s return is about to make his whole world shift.

Prologue

Gabe

“You can’t be serious.”

I said the words, but looking at the girl in front of me, I could tell she was. My Ash was reserved. Her emotions were always hiding beneath the surface. They broke through only sometimes.

In that moment, her desperation wasn’t hidden at all.

“It’s dangerous,” she insisted.

I tried to stay calm, to reason with her. “Ash, babe, just last week you were as excited as I was about me getting a prospect patch. I’ve always wanted to be a Disciple, and it was what you wanted, too.”

“That was before they killed my dad!”

Fuck.

Her head was totally fucked over this.

“You know they didn’t. They’re mourning Indian as much as I am, as much as you are. He died, and it’s fucking terrible, but you know any of those men would give their own life to bring him back to you. If you just calm down, you know it’s true.”

Tears fell from her blue eyes—eyes that had been stained red for over a week. Nothing made a man feel more fucking impotent than watching his woman cry constantly and not being able to do a damn thing about it. I hadn’t lied; any of the Savage Disciples MC men would give up their lives in an instant to bring their fallen brother back, to give Ash back her dad. I would take a bullet right then and there just to make her stop hurting.

“They might not have meant for him to die, but it’s their fault. The fucking club is the reason he’s gone!” She went right on working herself up.

In that moment, I wanted to be able to rewind more than I could put in to words. Just over a week before, we were happy. Everything was good. Fuck, everything was going exactly as it should.

I’d been made a prospect for the club, the first step to my fucking life-long dream of being a member. My uncle, Gunner, put the cut on me himself. It was everything I’d wanted since I could remember, since the first time Gunner brought me around the club as a kid.
The first thing I did? I went to Ash.

My girl, the daughter of a Disciple, grew up with the club. The brothers were her family, just like they were mine. Since I was six years old and I first met her, she’d known having that patch was all I wanted. Fourteen years later, it was real.

Ash was fucking thrilled. My firefly beamed as bright as I’d ever seen her. She’d thrown herself into my arms. She couldn’t stop looking at the cut on my shoulders, the visual proof it was really happening. At least, she couldn’t stop looking until I got her to take it off me so we could really get to celebrating.

But that night, with Ash curled up next to me in my bed, my cell rang. The first bad sign was the three a.m. call. The second was the way Gunner greeted me.

“Is Ash with you?”

I didn’t know why he would need to ask that. Ash was nearly always with me. Indian might not have liked it, but his daughter was eighteen. And anyway, she’d been staying the night with me on occasion even before that. So yeah, if she weren’t at home with Indian, she was in my bed.

I hadn’t expected him to be asking because there was no way for Indian to tell them she wasn’t home.

I hadn’t expected that I would need to wake my girl in the middle of the night.

I hadn’t expected that it would fall on me to tell her her only family member was gone.

I did, however, expect the way Ash had fallen apart at the news. I was even prepared for the fact that she wouldn’t bounce back from it right away. Moving forward was going to be a long road for her, I knew that.

Still, I never could have guessed she’d even think the things she was saying to me.

“So what, Ash? You want me to leave the club? Give up being a prospect and just take off?”

She couldn’t mean that.

“Yes.” Not even a moment’s hesitation.

“The club is family.”

“I know your uncle is—”

“No. Ash, the club is family. All of them, not just my uncle. The brothers are our family.”

She looked at me and something about her eyes scared the shit out of me. “No. I don’t have a family anymore.”

Fuck. It was so much worse than I thought.

“Baby, the brothers are still your family. They helped raise you. Can you honestly say Roadrunner, Tank, Gunner, Stone—none of those men are your family? They love you.”

Her tears came harder, but there was no surrender in her. “It doesn’t matter. I can’t stay here and wait for the club to take anyone else from me.” A sob rocked her before she could say, “I can’t stay here and wait until it takes you.”

I tried to give her distance. I tried to stand across the room from her like she’d asked so she could talk, but I wasn’t doing that shit anymore. The second I had my arms around her, her face burrowed into my chest and she sobbed. It was a position we’d become all too familiar with.

“Firefly, listen to me,” I said into her hair, “I know you’re hurting, but this isn’t right. I can’t leave the club. I won’t. Once this pain isn’t so fresh, you won’t want to either. We’ll get through this, babe. Just hold onto me.”

She didn’t say anything. She didn’t argue any more. I got her into bed thinking I talked her off the ledge. She was staying. We were staying right where we were supposed to be.
I woke in the morning to find out I was very, very wrong.

EXCERPT:

“We own most of the land in the Tech Center. My father bought up the land thirty years ago before any of this was here. And we lease it out.”
.
Jesus. What kind of money is that? I can’t even begin to understand it.

“Anyway,” Mac says, standing. “I’m waiting in here for a reason.”

“Is that right?” I stand up too, but my heart beats a little faster when I take him in. He’s wearing a dark gray suit today, a blue shirt that is so light it’s barely a color, and another brilliant cerulean-blue tie that makes his matching eyes shine as they stare into mine.
I don’t know why, but I step backwards. His full attention on me suddenly feels more like a force than a look. He steps forward, hands reaching for me. I bump against the wall, no escape, and then he fists the front of my blouse and rips it open, revealing my silk cami.

My mouth opens in surprise.

He rips the cami apart too. And then, with one forceful whoosh, both garments are lying in a puddle of fabric on the floor.

“What are you doing?” I yell.

The intense stare turns to a boyish smile. “I’d like you topless for breakfast. And I get to call the shots for our dates.”

“Why do I even bother with you? Just why?” I refuse to cross my arms and cover my tits. Fuck him. Just fuck him. “Every time I start to think you’re not a pig, you go and do something like this.”

“It’s fun, right?” His smile never cracks.

“No,” I say. “It’s humiliating.”

“Your tits are nice, Ellie. You should not be ashamed of them.”

“I’m not ashamed of them—”

“Good. Because I’d like to stare at them while we have coffee and discuss our date tonight.”

A knock comes from Mac’s office and I might have a panic attack that someone will come in and find me bare like this.

“Hold that thought,” Mac says, leaning down to kiss my lips. “Breakfast is here. Sit,” he says, pushing on my shoulders until I slump into the window seat again. “I’ll be right back.”
And then he enters his office, pulling our connecting door closed.

I listen to the conversation in there as I look down at my clothes. What the hell was he thinking? The cami is dust. Ripped straight down the middle. At least the silk button-up shirt is only missing all the buttons. I can probably tie it around my waist to make it out to the parking lot, but—

There’s a jingle of a cart and plates. We have… room service? What kind of company has room service?

I guess I’m not all that surprised they have it up here. We have several restaurants on campus. The Atrium has a cafeteria. Maybe this came from the cafeteria?

Mac is laughing on the other side of the door, then I hear a polite thank you just before the sound of a closing door.

The connecting door swings open again and Mac is there, a wide grin on his face. “I hope
you like pancakes.”

“This is not happening.”

“Oh, this is happening, Miss Hatcher. You are sitting here.” He points to the middle of the window seat as he pushes the cart towards me.

“I have no clothes, Mac. You ripped my cami. I’m going to have to tie that over-shirt on and go home to change. In fact,” I say, reaching down to get my blouse and pull myself together,
“I’m not coming back. I’m done. Just when I think you’re a human, you act like an ape.”

“Would you just relax, Ellie?” He rips the shirt from my hands, balls it up, and then tosses it in the air, where it arcs perfectly and sails into the new trashcan that matches the desk.

“Three points,” he says.

“It’s like you live in your own world or something. I think it’s funny that you accused me of living in some delusional fantasy, but you, Mr. Stonewall, you’re a raving lunatic who thinks the world is his asylum.”

“I’m going to take that as a compliment. Now sit. I’ve got it all under control.”

Excerpt

Seth was refreshing and vastly different from the people attending her father’s little cocktail party. These people hid behind well-constructed facades. The football players kept close to each other, as if there was strength in numbers. The men in suits, outwardly bored yet underneath excited as any kid, wanting to get a few words with their favorite player. And the wives of her father’s rich clients, eyeing the buffet of testosterone and fantasizing about secret autograph sessions in a motel somewhere.

She sighed and closed her eyes at the superficiality of it all. When had she become so cynical? She snorted softly. Maybe some of her father had rubbed off on her after all. After years of being an unwilling spectator at his events, she hadn’t managed to escape unscathed.

“I’m guessing from that sigh these parties aren’t your kind of thing.” Seth pointed his glass of beer at the crowd.

Damn, she needed to hide her thoughts better.

“That obvious, huh?” Oh, heck, did he think she found him boring? “It’s me. It’s not you, definitely not … um, I mean, you’re fabulous.” She snapped her mouth shut. Awesome, Harper.

His gaze gleamed with silent laughter.

She sucked in a breath and battled on. “You’re right. These corporate gigs aren’t for me.”

“What is?” Seth sipped his beer.

She thought for a second. “Street markets, hanging with friends over a home-cooked meal, seeing a classic movie at the Grand Illusion Cinema in the University district. The interior is original with red brocade chairs and fancy metalwork. Just divine.” Okay, now she was on a roll. “Oh, and I have to have Milk Duds. Two boxes if I’m with someone, because I don’t share.” If he didn’t understand the importance of candy while watching a movie then she’d leave right now. Some things were sacred.

“I get you on the Milk Duds. I have the same with Allens Jaffas lollies.” At her head tilt, he answered, “Aussie candy I order online and have mailed over. I guard that stuff like it’s the crown jewels. My brother Heath tries to steal handfuls when we watch the rugby. Bastard can get his own.”

Ah, they had a meeting of minds.

“I feel your frustration,” Harper nodded, her tone solemn.

Seth studied her for a moment then, after a quick glance around the garden, asked, “Can I tempt you to leave. Buy you dinner?”

“You tempt me a great many ways, Seth.”

She slapped a hand over her mouth.

The big Aussie’s lips kicked up at one corner, and his low chuckle sounded as if Hades himself was amused.

Under the influence of whatever evil genie now controlled her mouth, she’d just have to ride it out.

His invitation was tempting. Why hang around when her father had clearly dismissed her earlier? After all standing before her was a man who intrigued her and had just asked her out to dinner.

Not exactly a hard choice.

“Just what did you have in mind?” Her voice was calm, unlike the flutter in her tummy.

“Dinner, conversation and a chance to impress you with my suave moves and epic sense of humor.”

Hmm, he was laughing at himself, which was damn sexy, but there was a self-assuredness in the way he stood tall and proud that made her pulse skip. That alone should make her wary. She’d met plenty of cool dudes who turned out to be jerks with all the right words.

Still, Seth seemed so…upfront. And that dry humor was an instant hook for her.

“Confident, aren’t you?”

All teasing fled his eyes. He stepped closer, so close she could smell a hint of aftershave—a rich woody fragrance undercut with warm spices.

His gaze locked with hers as he ran a finger down the side of her cheek, leaving her skin tingling in its wake.

She held her breath and waited.

“I’m a man who knows what he wants. Right now, I want to take you to dinner and find out if you’re as intriguing as the idea of getting to know you promises.” He traced the blunt tip of his finger over the edge of her bottom lip. His touch wasn’t light but…firm, commanding, as if he was giving her a chance to feel him before he took possession. “My guess is I’ll be left wanting more.”

Her breath rushed out in a soft whoosh. Tall, daring and dangerous. That was Seth. Damned if it didn’t make her crave him all the more.

There's something about the written word that is pure magic.

Possibly it's the fact there are 26 letters in the English alphabet, and they can create something so beautiful or so empowering they're capable to change our lives.

I like to think of myself as 'unique'. My stories aren't for everyone, and sometimes I may push what you believe to be 'normal'.

Normal is subjective.
